Can I get reimbursed by insurance companies?

The question of reimbursement from insurance companies is different from state to state, province to province, country to country, certification to certification, and from  insurance  company to insurance company.

We have many students in Canada who are certified by the BOIM, BNMDP, and AAMA. These students are billing insurance companies such as Blue Cross for their services and being reimbursed. In the United States, eligibility for insurance payment depends on the state and on what type of service you wish to bill them for. It is best to speak to your certification board and have them look into your particular situation. They can provide the best answer to this question.

Billing codes are already available for the practice of biofeedback, pain management, weight loss, smoking cessation programs, PTSD, autism, stress management, and health coaching, and more modalities are being covered by insurance companies each year. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act also opens the door to greater coverage of complementary and alternative medicine by insurance companies. As health care moves more toward preventive medicine and pay-for-quality, we believe this trend will continue to move forward.

Some Quantum University graduates have successfully billed insurance companies for their services. However, the majority of natural and integrative medicine practitioners do not bill insurance companies because they prefer to operate successful cash practices. Most of these practitioners find it difficult to get reimbursed for all the different services they offer, and some modalities are simply not covered by insurance companies.

According to the National Center  of  Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), Americans spent $33.9 billion out of pocket on complementary and alternative medicine in 2009 alone. The alternative medicine consumer will be spending an estimated $115 billion annually by 2017. Most of these practitioners prefer not to deal with insurance companies since most of their clients are willing to pay out of pocket for these services.

Medical doctors and administrative staff are overwhelmed by the time-consuming work of dealing with insurance billing. Many doctors now choose cash options or go to a cash-only practice as a solution to generate additional income. These doctors are looking for practitioners with additional certifications, such as IMD, to offer more cash practice services to their clients. They are also seeking to employ healthcare professionals like our graduates who can work in their wellness or medical clinic under their umbrella. There is currently a real need for graduates of Quantum University to work under the supervision of licensed professionals who want to create additional income by expanding their cash practice or insurance billing.
